Q&A with Matthew Good
(Friday, July 6, 2001)

By KIERAN GRANT -- Toronto Sun
Matthew Good must be a big hit at record-company parties.
The Vancouver
rock crooner has repeatedly lashed out at his own label, Universal, and much of
its Canadian roster.
Good spoke with The Sun's Kieran Grant in advance
of the Matthew Good Band's show tonight at Kingswood with Sloan, Treble Charger
and Copyright.
THE SUN: Does Universal ever lean on you for your
comments about its bands?
GOOD: Whatever, dude. I openly call (a
Universal Music exec) a (expletive deleted) to the press every day.
THE SUN: So you're not a Sugar Jones fan, I imagine.
GOOD: Whatever. I heard they're all prima donnas now. Right.
They're walking around like they're the f---ing Temptations, these chicks. I saw
the video and I pissed my pants. You have no idea the leverage that gives me.
THE SUN: How so?
GOOD: Because now I'm
(Universal's) credibility. I'm sure (Sugar Jones) will sell a quadrillion
records. We live in a dark time.
THE SUN: What about bands who've
supposedly combined success and credibility, such as Radiohead?
GOOD: You get these pseudo-intellectual 20-year-old fans talking
about the artistic ramifications of a supergroup such as Radiohead. It's like,
'Pal, you've been snowed by a media machine. You're sitting around quoting Noam
Chomsky and you don't realize you've been sold a bill of goods.'
Rock
'n' roll is half rock 'n' roll and half how much money you have to spend to make
you believe it's better than everything else. Being in a Canadian band sucks,
because I can't outspend the Foo Fighters or Radiohead.
If I had that
kind of money I'd be making IMAX videos.
