Rock star... author... iconoclast... unique
Canadian talent...
1) Gordie.ca: Do you sometimes think that
people just don't get your sense of humour? (Much like what Carrot Top goes
through.)
Matthew Good: I think the majority of people
don’t get a great many things, let alone senses of humor.
2) Gordie.ca: It was written someplace that
you are too smart for rock music. Is this the case? Are you too smart for
polka?
Matthew Good: I’m not too smart for anything.
I am, on the other hand, too sexy for your party.
3) Gordie.ca: The band has seen the departure
of ex-bassist Geoff Lloyd and is currently dealing with the departure of
guitarist Dave Genn. What's it like bringing someone new into the
fold?
Matthew Good: Kind of like putting on clean
socks.
4) Gordie.ca: Why do you think that it is so
hard for Canadian musicians, who are not sexy women, to crack the US
charts?
Matthew Good: I can only speak for myself in
saying that we’re just not very good is all.
b) Gordie.ca: Is success in the US important
to you at all?
Matthew Good: Here’s a list of goals common to
all artists:
- The belief that you can actually take valuables and
cash with you into the afterlife. Therefore, you need to make sure you have a
gross amount of it laying around at all times just in case.
-The belief that you are only as good as the
inferiority complex of your native land says that you are. This, of course,
entails becoming some lame musical ambassador for your country and eventually
receiving the Order Of Canada for yelping ‘Everything I Do I Do It For You’,
which was primarily penned by an Englishman anyway.
5) Gordie.ca: Are the guys in the band, who
are not named Matt Good, ever going to stage some kind of uprising over the
band's name?
Matthew Good: To tell you the truth, I’m
really sick of that question. But having said that, I guess they could give it a
go. On the other hand, it’s not exactly that easy to play along to nothing, is
it?
6) Gordie.ca: Are you much of a Hank Snow
fan?
Matthew Good: Unsure.
7) Gordie.ca: Matt Good: Why so angry? b) Is
there any paperwork you have to go through to become a "self-professed
asshole"?
Matthew Good: No. You just leave it to the
press in a nation where saying phooey is grounds for a good stern booing. That
and people hate it when individuals such as myself don’t conform to their own
ideas of how I, or anyone in my position, should be. The great equalizer, of
course, is that if you don’t really care and realize that your happiness is not
linked to your success and the consumer’s part in it, then you’re
golden.
8) Gordie.ca: The band's early history
includes a couple of instances of record companies merging. How do you think
this has affected where you're at now?
Matthew Good: I feel permanently
transitional.
9) Gordie.ca: Have you ever stomped along with
Stompin' Tom?
Matthew Good: No. Not really.
10) Gordie.ca: Are you guys for or against the
unending collaborations and guest appearances of artists on other bands' albums?
Anyone you would like to pair with for a song?
Matthew Good: No, no. I’m all for whoring
yourself out to do as many sound track free for alls as is possible before the
bubble bursts.
11) Gordie.ca: Is there a song from any era,
in any genre, that you wish you had written?
Matthew Good: Angie by the Rolling Stones.
It’s perfect.
12) Gordie.ca: What do you make of Owen
Hargreaves' decision to play soccer for England?
Matthew Good: I would have done the exact same
thing if I was in his position.
b) Gordie.ca: Will Canada's national soccer
team ever qualify for the World Cup again?
Matthew Good:
Hopefully not. That way we won’t have to listen to Brian Johnson pretend
he’s an expert in yet another athletic field.
13) Gordie.ca: Can you please explain your
fascination with mechanical bulls?
Matthew Good: I have none really. But I’ll
pretend if it gets you off.
14) Gordie.ca: You are hosting a dinner party
and have to invite one of each of the following: a current Canadian politician,
a Degrassi character, a member of The Guess Who and a professional hockey
player. Who would you invite? What would you serve?
Matthew Good: I’d come down with something and
cancel.
15) Gordie.ca: You have a fairly rabid online
following, even funding and posting at the message board at
www.runningforhome.net. Is it important to you to be accessible to your
fans?
Matthew Good: Debasing ones self and spreading
falsehoods is always a good time.
16) Gordie.ca: Favourite Canadian film?
Canadian author?
Matthew Good: Quest For Fire. Dave
King.
17) Gordie.ca: Can you think of anything that
you would like us to shamelessly promote at Gordie.ca?
Matthew Good: Something other than anything I
have something to do with.
[Gordie.ca: We chose to promote www.christmasdaddies.org -- a great cause.]
